Professor Liming Wang, the director of the UCD Irish Institute for Chinese Studies, delivered a lecture about New Solution to the Needham Puzzle: The Relationship between Chinese Language, Mathematical Thinking, and Brain Function on April 8, 2024, sharing his research achievements in the intersection of language and multidisciplinary for our teachers and students. The lecture was hosted by the International Exchange Office and the School of International Education of SSPU. Sun Yan, the dean of the School of International Education, presided over the lecture, and students and faculty members of Chinese language and English majors attended this academic feast.
Started with the well-known “Needham Puzzle”, Prof. Wang leaded us to think about the profound question “Why did the scientific and industrial revolution not happen in China, even though ancient China has made important contributions to the development and progress of human science and technology?” at the beginning of the lecture.
Then, based on the different influences of Chinese (tones and pictograms) and Spanish (phonetic script) on the functional characteristics of the brain, Prof. Wang demonstrated numerous practical cases, scientific statistical methods and reliable experimental data to explore the effects of different languages on mathematical thinking patterns and brain neural mechanisms.
During the lecture, Prof. Wang conducted an in-depth and unique insight and interpretation of the “Needham Puzzle” from a new perspective of the internal connection between Chinese language, mathematical thinking and brain function.
During the Q&A session, students and faculty members asked for advice on their own doubts and questions, and shared their minds with each other which encompassed the lecture with the heated atmosphere. Prof. Wang quoted extensively, spoke eloquently, and explained comprehensively on the questions, conducting a deep-going interactive discussion with participants.
With its plentiful enlightenment on the multi-disciplinary interdisciplinary of language intelligence, the lecture not only expanded the horizon of teachers and students which boosted the integration of the dominant discipline chains in our school, but also probed into the creative thoughts and methods on the internationalization and promotion of Chinese.
曾任国际期刊《Journal of Chinese Economic and Business studies》的编辑(2014-2021),现任国际期刊《Energies》的专题顾问(2021至今)。
